Ingredients
For the Cake:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 ¾ cups granulated sugar
¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup whole milk
½ cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup hot water or brewed coffee (enhances chocolate flavor)
For the Chocolate Frosting:
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
3 ½ cups powdered sugar
½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
½ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
¼ cup heavy cream (adjust for desired consistency)
Directions
Making the Cake:
Preheat & Prepare – Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
Mix Dry Ingredients – In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add Wet Ingredients – Add milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed until smooth.
Incorporate Hot Liquid – Gradually add hot water or coffee while stirring. The batter will be thin, but that’s normal!
Bake – Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool – Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Making the Frosting:
In a large bowl, beat the butter until creamy.
Gradually add powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and salt, mixing until combined.
Add vanilla extract and heavy cream, then beat on high speed until fluffy.
Adjust the consistency by adding more cream if needed.
Assembling the Cake:
Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous amount of frosting on top.
Place the second layer over the frosting and cover the entire cake with the remaining frosting.
Decorate with chocolate shavings, sprinkles, or fruit as desired.
